Ethical conversion psychology: what to use and what to refuse
SalesGrowth · 2026-05-19 · 6 min read
Clarity, specificity, fluency and risk reduction improve results without manipulation. Fake urgency and manufactured scarcity do not belong on a credible business website.
The useful principles
Clarity: the visitor should never have to work out what you do. Specificity: concrete language is more believable than superlatives. Cognitive fluency: easy-to-process pages feel more trustworthy. Risk reduction: explain process, deliverables and expectations before asking for commitment.
What to refuse
Countdown timers that reset, invented customer counts, unverifiable revenue claims, fake review ratings and manufactured scarcity. These work briefly on strangers and permanently damage relationships with the buyers worth having.
They also create real legal and structured-data risk. Never encode ratings or reviews in schema markup unless they are genuine.
Friction is not always bad
A slightly longer form that qualifies properly can be better than a one-field form that fills your pipeline with unusable enquiries. Remove friction that serves nobody; keep friction that improves fit.
